The ventral tegmental area is most known for its role in reward and motivation, however the neurons in this region also signal aversive events. Joana's work focuses on integrating the ventral tegmental area in brain circuits of defensive behaviours. She is using optogenetics and fiber photometry tools combined with mouse behavior analysis.
